“Poetry Saint Du Shiyi’s Portrait”
Du Fu once worked as a minor official called “Shiyi”, so he was also called “Du Shiyi”. In Du Fu’s Thatched Cottage, there is a statue of him, and below it is engraved “Poet Saint Du Shiyi’s Portrait”. The correct punctuation should be “Poet Saint” “Du Shiyi” “Portrait”, but someone got it wrong (the local tour guide said), so it became “Poet Saint” “Du Shi” “Portrait”. The good poet “Du Shiyi” became “Du Shi” on the spot. If Du Fu knew, he might come down from heaven immediately to scold those who got his name wrong.
